Heart diseases are one of the major causes of death on our planet. Each year there are about 50,000 applications for heart transplantations but only 5,000 get the chance to have this surgery. World’s first heart transplant was carried out in 1967, in Cape Town, South Africa. The failing heart of a 55 year old man was replaced by the heart of 25 year old woman who died as a result of an accident. However, the patient did not prove to be lucky as after 18 months new heart was rejected by his body and he died. This happened quite often in those days. But the evolution of surgery and introduction of new drugs helped increase the life expectancy.
Nowadays, the heart transplant recipients have 90% survival rate after one year and 74% after 5 years. Research is also underway to regrow the organs using stem cells. New tests and drugs are being introduced to reduce the chances of rejection of the transplanted heart by the body.
The procedure involves putting the patient under Anesthesia. Then heart-lung machine is used to bypass the flow of blood from the heart. When the heart is completely empty from blood, its connection with the heart are cut and it is removed from the body. Then the donor heart is connected with the body and sewn. The blood supply is restored and the heart is given shocks to make it beating again. Before closing the chest again the surgeon checks the hearts for any possible leaks and proper operation of heart.
